Working Bikes Store
By buying a bicycle from the Working Bikes Cooperative you help save the planet by keeping it out of the landfill and help fund our program to send bikes to needy areas of the world.
Location:
1125 S. Western Ave
Chicago, IL 60612
(312) 421-5048
Hours:
Saturday: 12:00PM to 5:00PM
Sunday: 12:00PM to 5:00PM
Wednesday: 12:00PM to 5:00PM
Please note: During the summer months demand is very high and our stock of bicycles sells out quickly. Arrive before 1:00PM on Saturday or Wednesday to see the best selection. Alternatively you can shop in the winter when the store is much less crowded and the bicycle selection is much better.
What we offer:
We offer a range of recycled bicycles but the most common are:
- Vintage single-speed and 3-speed cruisers; especially Schwinn but also many Raleigh and other European brands.
- Lightweight (and heavyweight) road bikes (Schwinn Varsity/Continental, Raleigh, Peugeot)
- Some Mountain Bikes and BMX bikes (Trek, Giant, Mongoose)
- Classic (cantilever frame fat tire) cruisers (Roadmaster, Ross)
Cost of our bicycles:
Prices start from around $50 and depend upon the original value of the bicycle and its present condition. All bikes have been made roadworthy by our volunteers and staff. They are affordable and guaranteed ready-to-ride.
How it works:
Come in during sale hours and browse our selection. If you do not find a bicycle you like come back because new bikes come in regularly. When you find the bike you want look for a price tag. If there is not one one of the staff will price it for you. If you can not ride it home that day we will set it aside, but will ask that you leave a minimum deposit of $20.
We accept cash or credit card (minimum $10 credit card purchase).
Please do NOT:
- Ask to part out a bicycle. If you want a part from a bike, you can purchase the entire bike and remove the parts elsewhere. We're more than happy to take the stripped parts back in donation.
- Bring in other bikes to work on during business hours. You can use our tools to make adjustments on your bike but please, only a bike you're buying. If you need shop tools you should check out the open shops held regularly by West Town Bikes.
Please Note: We are nearly entirely a volunteer organization. We do not have the manpower to make repairs or install accessories or components not already a part of the bike. Our volunteers and staff will be more than happy to recommend a bike shop to you.
Proceeds from the sales go directly to the costs of shipping bicycles to places in need. Please see the About Working Bikes page for more information.
