Alexander Varman of Homer Glen earned his status by collecting bikes for the Working Bikes Cooperative of Chicago. He and his team of 20 scouts worked nearly 100 hours to collect old bikes, which would then be restored and donated to charities in Chicago and also poor nations whose people have no other means of transportation to work.

Varman, 19, a sophomore at Texas A&M University majoring in international studies, said he learned it wasn't the easiest task to complete, but he learned a lot about himself and how to interact with others and become a leader.

"It's not an easy path to earn the rank of Eagle Scout," Varman said. "People who have done it have done a lot. They are competent, knowledgeable people. When I first came into Boy Scouts, I enjoyed it, and it was a lot of fun. I wanted to get the most from it. Boy Scouts teaches the skills to help you the rest of your life."
